TANZANIA – INFORMATION ABOUT THE COUNTRY

Founded in 1964, the merger of two former colonies: Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The land is almost three times larger than Poland and is 948,087 square kilometers and is inhabited by nearly 36 million inhabitants. The primary language used by the local population is Swahili, and the official language – English. The capital is the city of Dar es Salaam. Tanzania is one of the few African countries south of the Sahara, where a large part of the population (35 – 40 percent.), Are Muslims. On the island of Zanzibar Muslims comprise up 99 percent of the residents. The main sources of income are: agriculture and tourism.

Tanzania’s most important tourist asset is the ability to watch wild animals in their natural habitat. In this country are as many as 12 national parks, 14 nature reserves, the area known as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the marine protected areas. Most of the animals that can be seen in parks: Serengetti, Selous, Ruaha, Ngorongoro. These are typical representatives of the savannah: wildebeest, zebras, lions, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, leopards, buffaloes. On Lake Tanganyika in Gombe National Park Steam, here lives a large population of chimpanzees in neighboring Uganda, Bwindi National Park – a rare mountain gorilla.

Highlights:

Zanzibar – often called “the fragrant island” because of the numerous plantations producing; cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and saffron. In the nineteenth century it was known in the world because of the slave trade. They were sent here from all over central Africa and then transported by ships to the Middle East. Currently, the island is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The local coral reefs attract diving enthusiasts from around the world.

Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa, which in terms of geology is a young volcano. On its slopes you can trace the layers of vegetation; of the savanna through the rainforest, until the zone of eternal snow. Every year more than 10 thousand tourists travel to its top, which is located at an altitude of 5,895 m. above sea level.

Ngorongoro reserve – formed in the crater of a long extinct volcano. It was once part of the Serengeti National Park and currently has its own special status. The crater walls rise to a height of more than 2 thousand meters above sea level and in a small area live thousands of animals, among them belonging to the so-called. “Big Five”. In the shallow waters of the lake Magedi are thousands of flamingos. In 1978, the Ngorongoro was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ruaha National Park – located far from cities and airports, allows you to relax away from the crowds of tourists. Its southern border is the Great Ruaha River. The park has 13 thousand sq. km., limited to the south and west by mountains reaching a height of 1,900 meters.

Huge areas are still virgin territory yet, which no human foot had tread, and tourists stop for accommodation in only a few locations. In the rainy season the dirt roads almost cease to exist.

Ruaha is the park to visit, you need to spend at least a few days there. Great Ruaha River is a popular place to live for hippos and crocodiles. In the park is also rich in elephants – it is estimated that it could be a population of up to 12,000.

Climate

In Tanzania, there are two rainy seasons; the longer – from March to June, during which rainfall is intense and very often accompanied and tropical storms and shorter – from November to January, when rainfall is much smaller. The highest temperatures prevail throughout the year on the coast, for example, average temperatures in July and August are 24° C in March 28° C. Inland temperatures are more moderate on average in July is 14° C, and in March about 18° C.
