VIETNAM – INFORMATION ABOUT THE COUNTRY

VIETNAM – INFORMATION ABOUT THE COUNTRY

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a country with very different climates inhabited by many ethnic groups. Its territory (331,690 sq. km.) stretches from the Gulf of Tonkin by the South China Sea to the Gulf of Siam. The indigenous Vietnamese, representing the majority of the country’s population, live mostly in the Red River delta, the Mekong delta and major cities.

More than 8 out of 85 million inhabitants belong to 53 ethnic minorities, for whom habitations are scattered around the country’s mountain villages. Each minority has developed its own way of life, distinct culture and beliefs. More than half the people of Vietnam are Buddhists, although in this country was born the original religion of Cao Dai which is a patchwork of beliefs from around the world. The official language is Vietnamese.

Located in the south, in the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, and former capital of Vietnam. The current capital – Hanoi, lies to the north, in the delta of the Red River, near the terraced rice field covered mountains. Between these two capitals stretches a narrow, but very long range of mountains whose slopes descend to beautiful beaches.

Particular highlights include the beaches of Nha Trang and located between Danang and Hoi An, China Beach, once a landing for U.S. troops and Marines. Less well known but equally charming is the largest island of Vietnam – Phu Quoc Island in the Gulf of Thailand. The most beautiful place of meeting of land and water in Vietnam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Halong Bay.

Vietnamese avoid displays of anger and expect similar behavior from others. When they become witnesses of one’s explosion, they react with laughter that comes from their embarrassment. The characteristic element is the love of Vietnamese tea. This drink warms the residents of the north and cools the residents of the south, and small shops giving it along with sweets can be found on every street.

The basis of Vietnamese cuisine is rice served in separate bowls, fish sauce and fresh spices and herbs. Moderate vegetarianism is popular in the country makes the meat more often an addition to meals rather than their a proper part.
