FIJI – INFORMATION ABOUT THE COUNTRY

The Republic of Fiji is an island state aptly called by the inhabitants of Viti – Sunrise, for being first on Earth to greet each new day. Many coral reefs surround the 322 islands, the vast majority of less than one million citizens live on the largest island – Viti Levu, where the capital is located, the city of Suva. The capital is also the largest city in Fiji with direct connection to the airport with the United States, Britain and Australia from which Fiji can be reached by boat.

On Viti Levu rises the highest peak in Fiji – Mount Tomanivi (1,324 m.), also called Mount Victoria. The second largest island in Fiji is Vanua Levu. In total, the two islands account for nearly 100 percent of the land area of ​​the country. Most of the inhabitants are indigenous Fijians, but there is also a noticeable presence of Indians. The smallest group is constituted by settlers from Europe and Asia. Fiji’s official languages ​​are: English, Fijian, Hindi and Urdu, respecting the interests of all the ethnic groups inhabiting the island. Nevertheless, between the Christian population and Fijian Indians are quite serious tensions.

Despite the disagreements between ethnic groups, their traditions come together in Fijian cuisine. In addition to seafood dishes and sugar cane there’s are lots of dishes typical of Indian and Hindu tradition which accounts for the elimination of beef form their cuisine. In the kitchen Fiji uses a drink called kava, having a mild narcotic effect.

By visiting Fiji, keep in mind that for the inhabitants of these islands the head is a sacred part of the body, do not therefore touch the head of another man. Passing someone on a country road, you have to greet him, and before entering a Fijian home – Remove shoes. National dress Fijians is sulu – a kind of skirt worn by both women and men. Sulu can be worn even on formal dress or military uniform is also used as a mandatory covering of the knees to visit the place of religious worship. Another characteristic element of the culture of Fiji is accompanying dance songs of passion, which shows important events in the history of the archipelago.

Climate

Fiji archipelago has a humid tropical climate. From November to April summer air and water temperatures rise to about 27° C. The waters surrounding Fiji are then quiet, as are the animals inhabiting them. The incredible manta rays, more likely to appear in sight due to the wealth of plankton, which slightly reduces water clarity. In the summer months, however there is considerable humidity and rainfall that could last between November and January and the possibility of tropical cyclones. During the winter, which is from May to October, the water cools down to 24° C, the waves are bigger and visibility below the surface exceeds 30 m. Winter in Fiji was also marked by the smallest humidity and lowest air temperature, with the most pleasant weather in June, July and August.
