EGYPT – INFORMATION ABOUT THE COUNTRY

Egypt is a true paradise for both lovers of blissful relaxation in the shade of palm trees, as well as real adventurers and ancient secrets. This former land of the pharaohs for centuries attracted compelling stories of an ancient civilization that left breathtaking pyramids and tombs, intriguing mummies, mysterious hieroglyphics and unusual mythology.

Although the majority (about 90%) of the surface of the country is desert, it is Egypt’s Nile river, the longest in the world, with one of the largest deltas, whith is one of the largest artificial water reservoirs – Lake Nasser. The life-giving Nile enabled its development and in its delta, thanks to a very favorable climate, the majority of the economy and the population lives there. The country boasts access to two seas – the Mediterranean to the north and Red in the east, which also boosts the dynamic development of leisure tourism, as well as a wealth of fish and seafood, which are a tasty alternative to meat dishes (beef or lamb). Among other local specialties are dishes based on legumes, zucchini or eggplant and rice or traditional Arabic bread.

Cairo, located in the Nile delta is the capital of the country, it creates with about 15 million inhabitants, the largest metropolis in Africa. This vibrant city abounds in numerous monuments, mosques and museums – including the famous Egyptian Museum and streets suffused with the enticing aroma of spices, water pipes, strong coffee and sweet mint tea pull into the bazaars with all the shimmering colors, to finally accommodate the weary wanderer in one of the many cafes where the locals like to spend their time. Adjacent to Cairo, Giza is the goal of trips for those who want to see their with their own eyes preserved to this day, two of the seven wonders of the world – the mysterious Sphinx guarding the impressive pyramid of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, date back nearly 5,000 years.

Heading south the trail of ancient buildings, lies the huge impression, certainly the pearl of Upper Egypt – a unique complex of temples of Luxor and Karnak and rock tombs in the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, where in 1922 Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered filled with treasure.

For those travelers yearning for moment of relaxation, the sandy beaches of the quite, warm, salty Red Sea will certainly appeal. Lying on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula town of Sharm El Sheikh, together with accommodating a bit further north of Dahab attracts diving enthusiasts and water sports thanks to the magnificent coral reef, inhabited by an unusually large number of diverse creatures. The nearby Mount St. Catherine is the highest peak of Egypt, and squatting at her feet is a Christian monastery, like many other monuments of Egypt, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
