Botswana is a country with an area of ​​582,000 square kilometers. It has a population of approx. 1.5 million inhabitants live in the capital Gaborone 144,000. The main languages ​​are English and Setswana. About 17 percent of ​​the country is national parks and 21 percent is wildlife management areas.

Since obtaining independence in 1966, Botswana has consistently relied on tourism, and therefore local authorities take great care to ensure the effective protection of wildlife and nature. The low population density of huge swathes of the country, especially the Okavango River delta and the Kalahari Desert, are among the few places on earth where you can still explore the unusual wealth of wildlife and see fantastic landscapes, untainted by human civilization.

Highlights in Botswana:

Moremi animal sanctuary – with unique global backwaters, arising desert areas in the delta of the Okavango River. It’s simply an incredible labrynth of canals, lagoons and islets, which is a habitat for a large variety of animals. Most are freshwater birds, you can also meet: hippos, crocodiles, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and antelopes. The only means of transportation through the Okavango Delta, is a local boat.

Chobe National Park – located on the northern border of Botswana, are the Chobe and Savute rivers. It is famous for the world’s largest elephant population that resides here. Approximately 70,000 elephants and several herds of lions. Animals can be seen from cars, as well as from the boat. This is a very popular fishing area for tourists.

Reserve Kalahari desert. The Kalahari Desert covers almost half of the area of ​​Botswana. In addition to the huge sea of ​​sand is a dry savanna, covered with parched grass and a few acacias and baobabs. In these semi-arid areas are mostly antelopes, but also lions and hyenas.

Khama rhino reserve – an area of 4 thousand hectares. The largest population of the White Rhino lives here. The largest animal in Botswana and the largest population of White Rhino’s in Africa. Other frequently encountered animals are giraffes and antelopes. The Botswanan authorities plan to soon resettle the black Rhino to the reserve land.

Climate

Tropical, dry and warm, with a hot season which lasts from October to March, when the temperature reaches 35° C. The average temperature in southern Botswana in the summer is approximately 26° C and in winter, 10° C, in the northern region respectively 24° C in the hot season and 16° C in the winter. During the winter frosts often occur. Rainfall is very low, from 200 to 500 mm per year, uneven throughout the year. The precipitation occurs from November to March. Rainfall is especially low in the south of the country, where droughts can last even years. The average temperature and rainfall in the capital are 25° C with 110 mm of rainfall in January and 15° C in July with 0 mm of rainfall.
