Amanjiwo, Central Java

Amanjiwo, Central Java

Amanjiwo, enveloped by the rainforest of central Java, is set within a natural amphitheatre – where the Menoreh Hills rise up nearby and the farmlands of the Kedu Plain spread below steep volcanoes on the horizon. Throughout the resort, motifs pay homage to central Java’s ancient temples.

Location: Amanjiwo’s superb location provides an ideal base for discovery in Central Java – allowing guests to explore the region’s unique culture, centuries-old temples, vibrant markets, natural beauty and colourful festivals. Among the best-preserved ancient monuments in the world, Borobudur is a short distance from Amanjiwo. The 9th-century Buddhist sanctuary features 1,460 stone relief panels and 504 life-size Buddha statues, each sculpted from a single stone. From the top gallery, one can enjoy panoramic views of Central Java, particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

Accommodation: Set in two graceful crescents, the 35 Suites (243 sq. m.) are centred around Amanjiwo’s main building. Amanjiwo’s suites feature domed roofs and sliding glass doors that open onto garden terraces. All suites include a thatched-roof bale with a daybed for outdoor lounging and dining, and 15 suites enjoy private pools. Inside, there are a four-pillar beds on a terrazzo platform, coconut wood and rattan furniture, rawhide lamp shades, Javanese textiles and antique glass paintings. The Dalem Jiwo Suite (1,200 sq. m.) is a discrete compound, complete with two free-standing bedroom pavilions, a central rotunda for dining or relaxing and a 15-metre, Javanese-stone swimming pool. Views from the suites are of picturesque terraced farmland and the Menoreh Hills, or of Borobudur and the surrounding valley.

Restaurants and bars: Both Indonesian and Western cuisines are served in Amanjiwo’s restaurant. The speciality of the house is Makan Malam, a series of classic Javanese dishes presented in traditional brass bowls. Amanjiwo’s garden and nearby farms supply most of the ingredients used by the chef.

Facilities: library; boutique; art gallery with regular exhibitions; specially-designed Spa Suite offering Javanese and traditional beauty treatments; tennis court; 40-metre swimming pool with Pool Club (drinks, snacks and light lunches).
